This is Sonny Hutchins at Martinsville Speedway, in the Dogwood 500 on March 24, 1977 a 250 lap race for the Late Model Sportsman series of NASCAR. They just line up the 36 fastest Sportsmen in the country and let 'em rip. Martinsville's qualifying system locked in only the top 10 through time trials. Everybody else had to qualify through heats, which a lot of people thought were better races than the 250-lapper itself.
